I estic molt satisfet dโ€™haver pogut aportar-hi un toc personal i autรจntic.

(ENG)

On March 11, the Cantata “El Bosc Viu” was premiered at the Enric Granados Municipal Auditorium in Lleida. A commission from the School and Municipal Conservatory of Music of Lleida and performed by the students of the center.

The theme of the cantata revolves around an imaginary and fantastic world in which everything is ideal. But there are two families, the Nymphs and the Elves who are fighting for power and control of the Forest. Ulmer, the Silver Wolf is responsible for maintaining the peace and harmony of the forest, but the war between the two families does not make it easy at all.

Writing this musical history was quite a challenge, it would not have been possible without the collaboration with Pau Porta Ginรฉ, lyricist and illustrator of this cantata.

“El Bosc Viu” would also not have been possible without the great work done by the Youth Choirs of the Lleida Conservatory and the Professional Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dolors Ricart and Robert Faltรบs as the choir’s preparer.

I invite you to see this magnificent audiovisual production of the Cantata made by the film students of the Catalan School of Cinema and Television (ECCIT).

LUZ DE MAR (Sea Light)

Luz de Mar has been selected for many festivals, and the soundtrack has already received 3 awards and a nomination. The authenticity and originality of the music, together with the discourse and narrative with the film, have made it receive the attention of different festivals and juries.

The Monthly Film Festival has made us a very nice review of the short film that I share with you so you can read it:

“At first glance, โ€˜Sea Lightโ€˜ doesnโ€™t look like a project that aims to impress with a so-called spectacular action. But John Doe gives us a subtler experience, a refined psychological game, and a tailor-made atmosphere in which โ€œsterileโ€ realism is intertwined with fantasy. In addition, the fact that the director chooses to build his short film around a single character makes that complicity between the spectator and the protagonist even stronger. This connection makes you feel much more intensely the emotional fluctuations of the old lighthouse keeper, who develops against the background of an almost sacred fascination for the mysteries of the world he lives in an existential crisis that pushes him into madness. What seems to begin as a meditation on the fragility of life, in the style of the famous novel by Hemingway, turns into a story that is closer to the daily quirks of some proses signed by Julio Cortazar or the aquatic nightmares recalling the โ€œCold Skinโ€ book/movie. Likewise, the impenetrable secret of the sea that sends mysterious messages to the old keeper has something of the almost gothic aura of H.P. Lovecraftโ€™s writings when describing enigmatic cults dedicated to supernatural entities. However, the director doesnโ€™t give us access to the final epiphany of the character โ€“ the gods who are shown to him, in the end, are invisible to us. Following the extreme gesture of the protagonist, only the uninterrupted breathing of the sea remains, keeping its enigmas unhindered.

We could say, from this point of view, that the real character of the short film is, in fact, the sea, whose presence is felt in every moment of this epiphanic nightmare lived with eyes wide open. That is why John Doe invests so much in creating this rather twilight universe, this atmosphere that exudes both absolute freedom and abysmal fear. The sea, the quintessential female symbol, is not only a constant visual presence but also a permanent seductive โ€œvoiceโ€ that insidiously overwhelms the main character. This fascination that contaminates the viewer also occurs gradually, through a slow burn narrative progression professionally conducted with well-balanced cinematography and a suggestive soundtrack. โ€˜Sea Lightโ€™ is a short film that resembles a mermaid song: the magnetism it emanates will trap you in an experience that may make you shiver. And thatโ€™s why we enjoyed every single moment of it!

For its temperate, but at the same time fascinating and terrifying, atmosphere, and for the professionalism with which the director builds this final confrontation of a character with his own destiny, โ€˜Sea Lightโ€™ was awarded the Film of the Month distinction in the May 2022 edition of TMFF.”

CD Vistes al mar – QUARTET VELA

I’m happy to present my first participation in a chamber music album as a Composer. Quartet Vela is a talented young saxophone quartet that trusted me to be part of their musical journey between Catalunya and Chile. โ€œHรฅrgalรฅtenโ€ was the piece that I wrote for them, a work inspired in a Swedish folk legend about the Devil and a village called Hรฅrga.

The idea of the piece came after watching a well-known horror movie called “Midsommar”, a film that is set in the village of Hรฅrga.

Here you can read the story about โ€œHรฅrgalรฅtenโ€ :

“It is a late Saturday night and all the young people in Hรฅrga have gathered to dance in a barn. Suddenly in the middle of the dance, the music gets interrupted and a new fiddler steps forward from the shadows. He had a large dark hat on his head and you could see a pair of ‘burning’ eyes. The fiddler lifted the violin to his chin and began to play a song that had never been heard before. All the young people immediately began to dance to the new tune. But once they entered the dance, they could not stop dancing. The dance continued throughout the night and when dawn arrived the fiddler left the barn. After him came all the dancers, following him in a line. They couldn’t stop dancing. The sound of the violin fueled the dancers will to move their feet. When the church bells rang for service, the dancers disappeared with the fiddler. A girl remained laying on the dance floor in the lodge. No one had listened to her when she warned them about the fiddler, and no one noticed the fiddlers hooves in the midst of the wildest dance they’ve ever been through. The legend continues, saying that the fiddler led the dancers to Hรฅrgaberget (Hรฅrga Mountain) where they danced until only their bones were left. Some even say that you can still see the marks from the ring dance at Hรฅrgaberget, and if you are so brave to venture out on a night of the full moon, it is said that you can hear the music that the devil once played for those who died.”

[montserrat] – a personal view

In April 28th, 2021 my piece [montserrat] was premiered by the ensemble NORRBOTTEN NEO. After aproximately one year of pandemic with the COVID-19, it was possible to perform my piece in the Nathan Milstein Hall from the KMH (Stockholm). Wonderfully conducted by Sofia Winiarski.

With this piece I wanted to experiment with the characteristic texture of the mountains of Montserrat, and after living 4 years there when I was a child, it was special to express my artistic view about this beautiful place.

It was really interesting to represent the roughness and the grey rocks from this marvelous mountain with the scordatura of the strings, but also with the magnificent sound from the alto flute, the bass clarinet and the bass drum.

One sound that makes this piece really special and that makes you feel that you are in Montserrat is the sound of the Bells, that are played by the piano, the vibraphone and one tubular bell. But also with the alto flute and the bass clarinet playing some ressonances. There is also a part of “reality” with a tape that sounds inside the piano and which emits the real sound of the bells that mixes with the instruments in certain parts.

The misterious and irregular lines of the mountains is another element that you can perceive when you are listening to the piece. I represented the drawing of the mountains with glissandis and fast movements in all the instruments going up and down, as if I were literaly drawing the lines in a painting. The scordatura helped in the string instruments to make more interesting arpegiandos.

And the spiritual voices from the boys’ choir, Escolania de Montserrat, is also a present element in the piece. I was a member of the choir from the age of 10 to my 14th, and in the piece you can hear the angelical voices, and synthetic voices mixed with the instruments, coming from a distant sound and creating a blurred memory. And also if you listen carefully you can also listen to my voice singing from when I was 12 years old.

en morgonpromenad

This piece that came to my mind walking on the snow in the morning in the beautiful city of Stockholm. I move slowly, moving one paw after another as I draw my footprints in the snow. I breathe the cold and feel the that the air is pure, and I let myself be carried away by my thoughts thanks to the nature and landscape of Reimersholme and Lรฅngholmen.

The pandemic prevented this work from being premiered in front of the public in Stockholm. I am very grateful to the MAMAMAMA Quartet and especially to Matej for making this recording possible despite the difficulties of the complicated 2020.

DANCE OF THE DEATH

Dance of the Death premiered in the Kungasalen from the KMH in Stockholm. September 25th, 2020. The Swedish Wind Ensemble conducted by Anders Emilsson.

This piece relates a story that I had in my mind and that I found interesting to turn it into music for a wind orchestra.

Some skeletons are coming out from their graves and they start a dance. While dancing they remember what was the feeling to be alive. But for a short time, because they have to come back to their graves again. I tried to explain this different situations and feelings with creepy motives and melodies, and with some instrumental effects. And even more important is the rhythmic aspect that stands out with a very important role in this piece, trying to represent the dance movements and the orthopedic steps of the skeletons.

COMPRIMIDOS

“Comprimidos” was my first Soundtrack done 100% with electronic music – with the exception of a piano that I distorted to 6 bits, imitating the sound it would make if it were coming out of a screen/television. This distortion was like compressing the music and reinforcing the message of the futuristic plot. A part from the music, I also created the Sound Design that was in concordance with the music, which, despite not being in the soundtrack, has very “musical” sound effects, both rhythmically and in its form of creation with synthesizers.

This short film was also my first approach to the sci-fi genre. A project produced in ECCIT (Escola Catalana de Cinema i Televisiรณ) written and directed by Laura Garcรญa.

This soundtrack was really interesting and challenging to create, and I invite you to listen to it on Spotify (or iTunes). Here you have the trailer:
